Description

This dataset contains 1212 occurrences of birds recorded at 2 Danish lighthouses ("Lodbjerg Fyr" and "Hanstholm Fyr") from 1886 to 1939. These records are based on digitization of historical document "Birds at the Danish Lighthouses, 1883–1939' (In Danish, "Fuglene ved de danske Fyr, 1883–1939"). During this digitization, text has been extracted from the scans of the document through OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. The data from the scanned PDFs have been transfered into spreadsheet format. A taxonomic checking, data curation, cleaning, format and transformation, and the entry of metadata for the published dataset have been realized. One core and two extensions have been used during the publication process. The core gave details on the occurrences (sex, date, number of individuals counted, geographical coordinates, localities, etc.). One of extension gave details on the media (images) added and the second extension gave details about the taxonomy.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,212 records.

2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Study Extent Birds censed at the two Danish lighthouses "Lodbjerg Fyr" and "Hanstholm Fyr" between 1886 and 1939
Quality Control The Ornithology Curator in the Bird Department leaded the team responsible for taxonomic checking, data curation, cleaning, format and transformation, and overseed the entry of metadata for the published dataset. The team includes a collaborating researcher from Sweden, and two postdoctoral students. They have been selected for this task because they are used to working with digital biodiversity data.
