Description

This checklist compiles species designated as invasive or potentially invasive in the Hawaiian Islands, documented through a community and school-engaged data collection project. It includes taxa from multiple kingdoms, reflecting the broad impact of invasive species in the region. This dataset was developed under the guidance of the Hawaii Invasive Species Council (HISC) and includes field data collected by students, researchers, and herbarium staff.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 21 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Taxon (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Title Hawaii Invasive Species Council (HISC) High School Invasive Species Monitoring Project Identifier
Funding Federal grant awarded to the Hawaii Invasive Species Council (HISC) to support invasive species education, data collection, and monitoring in Hawaii’s high schools.
Study Area Description The study focused on multiple locations across the Hawaiian Islands, selecting two high schools per island situated in areas with poor or no prior invasive species documentation. Survey routes covered local neighborhoods and natural areas where the 21 target invasive plant species are known or suspected to occur.
Design Description The project employed a community-based participatory design combining education, outreach, and biodiversity monitoring. High school students were trained as Student Mentors to lead day-long community surveys using GPS-enabled mobile phones and digital data collection forms.

Additional Metadata

Introduction This dataset stems from a federally funded initiative led by the Hawaii Invasive Species Council (HISC), designed to incorporate invasive species education into Hawaii’s statewide high school curriculum. The project sought to increase local knowledge about invasive species, enhance data collection efforts, and generate annotated checklists for regions with limited prior documentation.
Purpose The purpose of this dataset is to enhance local knowledge, monitoring, and management of invasive plant species across under-documented regions of the Hawaiian Islands. By engaging high school students and community members through targeted education and citizen science programs, the project aimed to increase data collection capacity.
Maintenance Description This is a pilot version of the checklist developed for publication. Future updates may be planned as more invasive species are documented or verified, or as taxonomy is updated through field surveys and expert input.
